What the 2020–2025 Crypto Cycle Reveals About Rules-Based Income — And Why 2022 Changed the Conversation

In 2022, Bitcoin fell 65% and the median crypto asset lost 72.7% of its value. An RXI™-gated, rules-based grid system held flat. Here is the mechanism, the data, and what it means for the advisor conversation.

Every advisor who had a client with meaningful crypto exposure in 2022 remembers the conversation. Bitcoin fell 65%. Ethereum fell 68%. The median crypto asset lost 72.7% of its value. FTX collapsed. Luna imploded. The question clients were asking was not philosophical — it was immediate: why is this still in my portfolio, and what are we going to do about it?

That conversation is the reason the analysis in this article matters. Not to relitigate 2022, but to examine whether a systematic, rules-based approach to crypto income could have behaved differently — and whether the data supports using it in a client conversation today.

The short answer: yes, and the mechanism is straightforward enough to explain in one client meeting.


Why 2020–2025 Is the Relevant Comparison Window

Before examining the data, a brief note on the choice of time period — because it affects every number in this analysis.

You will occasionally see crypto strategy comparisons anchored in 2013 or 2015. Those periods include Bitcoin's run from under $1 to $20,000 and back. No systematic income strategy — and no active manager of any kind — outperforms buy-and-hold in a 20,000x parabola. The 2013–2019 period is interesting as market history, but it is not the reference period an advisor would use when evaluating a systematic income strategy for client portfolios today.

The 2020–2025 window is the normative period for three reasons. First, it contains a complete market cycle: bull (2020–2021), crash (2022), and recovery (2023–2025). Second, all cryptocurrency assets rated B- or higher in CoinRoc's quality system have meaningful price history from 2020 onward — this is the period the system was designed to operate in. Third, and most practically: this is the period an advisor or a client would reference in a due-diligence review. It is recent, it is complete, and it contains the most challenging year in recent crypto history.

Our published 13-year walk-forward study (2011–2025) covers 135 fold periods and 17 assets and shows the same regime-detection pattern throughout. The 2020–2025 window isolates the complete modern market cycle and provides the cleanest apples-to-apples comparison.


The Chart: Four Lines, One Story

The chart tracks four equity curves from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2025, each starting with $10,000:

  • L1 — Plain Grid (no regime filter): Ends at $5,129. CAGR −10.5%.
  • L2 — RXI™-Gated Grid: Ends at $12,126. CAGR +3.3%.
  • L3 — Full CoinRoc System (RXI™ + Asset Quality Rating ≥ B-): Ends at $19,609. CAGR +11.9% (simulated backtest).
  • S&P 500 (buy-and-hold benchmark): Ends at $18,703. CAGR +11.0% (actual index returns).

The lines tell three different stories through 2022 — and that is where the advisor conversation lives.

All CoinRoc lines are hypothetical and simulated. Results are derived from a walk-forward backtest run May 2026 across 17 pre-selected cryptocurrency assets using historical price data. L1 returns are directly measured from fold data. L2 and L3 returns are estimated (~) via simulation logic applied to qualifying fold subsets; they cannot be directly extracted from the fold-level JSON and should be understood as bounded approximations, not exact figures. Results are net of estimated Binance.US retail fees (0.40% maker / 0.60% taker / 0.05% volatility-conditional slippage).

These curves represent single-asset or per-fold simulation outcomes. They do not represent the results of a multi-asset portfolio sleeve with quarterly rebalancing; see the disclosure note in the Portfolio Construction section of this article for the distinction.

Through 2021, L1 and L3 track reasonably close. Both benefit from the 2020–2021 bull market. L1 reaches approximately $12,034 by end of 2021. Then 2022 arrives.

L1 falls from approximately $12,034 to $5,090 — losing nearly 58% of its value in a single year. By the end of the study period in 2025, it has not recovered. The compounding math is unforgiving: recovering from a 58% loss requires a 138% subsequent gain just to return to the high-water mark.

L2 and L3 hold flat through 2022 in the simulation — not recovered over two years, not partially mitigated, flat — because the RXI™ regime detection system classified market conditions as trending-down and moved capital to cash. No deployment. No simulated losses.

Then L2 and L3 resume and compound through 2023–2025. By the end of the study period, L3 finishes at $19,609 — edging the S&P 500's $18,703 while having experienced zero simulated capital loss in crypto's worst year.


How a Rules-Based Filter Handled 2022

The mechanism behind that 2022 flat line is worth understanding precisely, because it shapes the fiduciary conversation.

RXI™ (Regime eXecution Intelligence) — a regime detection system built on a Mamdani fuzzy-inference engine — reads three market inputs continuously: the Hurst exponent, which measures whether a price series is trending or mean-reverting; the moving average position, which identifies directional bias; and volatility momentum, which tracks whether risk is accelerating or stabilizing. When these three inputs combine to indicate a trending or distribution-phase regime, RXI™ reduces grid engagement toward zero and moves capital to cash.

This is a critical distinction: RXI™ does not predict market direction. It does not forecast that 2022 will be a bear market. It reads what the market is currently doing — and when the answer is "sustained directional trend downward," it steps aside. The grid does not run in those conditions. Capital is held in cash or stablecoins. The strategy earns nothing in that period. But it loses nothing.

The technical language for advisors who want it: at the Hurst exponent level, values above 0.55 indicate trending behavior — the environment where grid trading structurally fails, because the market is moving too consistently in one direction for the grid to complete round-trip oscillations. In our ETH 2018 case study from the 13-year paper, RXI™ recorded a Hurst exponent of 0.605, well above the 0.55 defensive threshold, and classified the period as trending. Grid engagement dropped to zero. ETH lost 82.4% on a buy-and-hold basis. An unprotected grid still lost 61.6%. The RXI™-gated position returned 0%.

The 2022 case is identical in structure. RXI™ detected trending-down conditions at the start of the period, moved to cash, and held there through the collapse.


The Three-Layer System, Explained Simply

The full CoinRoc system that produces the L3 line is three filters in sequence:

Layer 1 — The grid itself. Places a ladder of buy and sell orders across a price range. Each time the price oscillates across a grid line, the system completes a round-trip and captures the spread as realized income. No directional prediction required — the strategy earns from oscillation.

Layer 2 — RXI™ regime detection. Evaluates whether the current market environment is oscillating (grid-favorable) or trending (grid-hostile). When trending conditions are detected, the system steps to cash. This is the layer that handled 2022.

Layer 3 — Asset quality rating (B- or higher). Before any asset is considered for active grid deployment, it is scored on a composite index that incorporates raw grid performance history, Sortino ratio, risk-adjusted return, and an Entropy Trading Score that measures behavioral consistency. Only assets in approximately the top 27% of the tradeable universe — those meeting the B- threshold or higher — qualify for deployment. The rating is dynamic: an asset that qualifies in one period may not qualify in the next.

The combination matters. RXI™ protects against the wrong environment at the macro level. The quality rating protects against the wrong asset at the micro level. Together they produced a 97% fold-level win rate on rated assets in simulation over the 2020–2025 window — meaning in 97 of every 100 test periods where a B- or better asset was deployed, the strategy generated a positive simulated return.

The Portfolio Construction Implication

Key finding for advisor context: L3 CAGR of +11.9% (simulated backtest) versus the S&P 500's +11.0% (actual index returns) — with zero simulated capital loss in 2022's worst crypto year in history, versus an −18.1% S&P drawdown that same year.

The diversification case for a small grid allocation rests on two properties working together: a distinct income mechanism and conditional low correlation.

Because grid trading earns from price oscillation rather than directional movement, its return profile has near-zero correlation with equity markets across full history — approximately ρ ≈ 0.02 across the full walk-forward dataset. The important qualification, which every advisor should understand before applying this to a client portfolio: in loss years specifically — 2018 and 2022 — that correlation rose to approximately ρ ≈ +0.76. The diversification benefit is conditional on the grid generating positive returns. In the severe bear years where equity markets also declined, crypto assets and grid strategies moved together.

This is why RXI™ is load-bearing to any portfolio construction argument. Without regime detection, the correlation in loss years undermines the diversification case precisely when diversification matters most. With RXI™ active and moving to cash in 2022, the strategy preserved the capital that would have otherwise correlated downward with equities. The client does not experience correlated drawdown in that scenario — they experience cash.

For income-focused portfolios where recovery timelines from meaningful drawdowns are compressed — a characteristic common in later-stage wealth management contexts — the behavioral property of the 2022 result may matter more than the CAGR comparison. A client in drawdown who needs income may be forced to sell at the wrong time. A client in cash who needs income can wait.

Important note on measurement level: The equity curves in the chart above — including the L3 Full CoinRoc result of $19,609 and +11.9% CAGR — represent asset-level, single-asset simulation outcomes: one position, one rated asset, RXI-gated, held continuously over the 2020–2025 period. These figures do not represent what an advisor would achieve from a multi-asset rated grid sleeve embedded in a blended portfolio with quarterly rebalancing. At retail exchange fee tiers, Yodacom Research's separate portfolio construction study found that the quarterly turnover costs of a 10-symbol sleeve rebalanced four times per year consume the gross grid return entirely. Advisors modeling a portfolio-level allocation should use their own cost-structure analysis rather than applying the single-asset CAGR figures from this chart to a sleeve result.

The appropriate framing for clients is precise and limited: a small allocation to a near-zero-correlation income strategy with active regime protection is a structurally sound diversification argument for the portion of an income allocation that currently carries equity correlation. Not as a portfolio anchor. Not as a crypto speculation vehicle. As a modest, rules-based income source with a different correlation profile and an automatic exit when conditions become hostile.


What This Means for the Client Conversation

The advisor's conversation with a crypto-curious client has traditionally had two options: explain why you are not adding it (reasonable but increasingly difficult as allocations proliferate) or add unmanaged exposure (straightforward but leaves the client fully exposed to 2022-style drawdowns).

The data from the 2020–2025 window supports a third option: a rules-based, regime-aware systematic income approach that, in simulation, delivered S&P 500-comparable returns over the complete modern market cycle — with the RXI filter moving capital to cash through 2022 while unprotected grid strategies experienced severe drawdowns.

That third option has a defensible fiduciary framing — one rooted in portfolio construction theory, not crypto enthusiasm: "This strategy earns income from a different mechanism than your other income assets. When market conditions become unfavorable for grid trading, it moves to cash automatically. We added a small allocation to diversify the income profile of your portfolio."

That sentence is accurate, data-backed, and explainable to any client. It does not require the advisor to have a view on Bitcoin's long-term value. It requires only that the advisor understands the mechanism, the evidence, and the limitations.

The limitations are real and should be disclosed fully. All figures are simulated backtest results. Past simulated performance does not guarantee future results. The strategy can experience drawdowns even with RXI™ active — the regime filter reduces but does not eliminate downside risk. In extreme risk-off environments where correlations rise across all asset classes, grid trading is not immune. The appropriate allocation for income-focused clients is in the single digits to low double digits as a percentage of total income allocation.

With those caveats stated precisely, the modern market data is the foundation for a conversation worth having.
